She was home, finally.

Dematerializing had not been easy. Jack was doing something to her frequencies, blocking her natural abilities like a dam to a river. She wasn’t sure what exactly had transpired between them, but was certain he was probably wondering the same thing. That thought gave her consolation.

Still, as they’d pulled up in front of Jack’s house a while ago, and he and the lighter one, Rad, waited for her to step out of the car, Kit had a moment where she didn’t feel like a weight was suffocating her. Taking advantage the moment Jack had looked away, she’d summoned enough focus to dematerialize herself back to her place.

But just before she’d felt that lovely weightlessness of traveling through time and space, she’d seen Rad’s face. He’d looked scared out of his wits when he stared at her. But when he looked at Jack, there was something different, something affectionate. She wondered if Jack knew the man was in love with him.

Trying not to focus on the feelings emanating from the two mortals, Kit went to her study, moving around the dimly lit room with knowledge and ease. She collected what she needed: her wand, her cauldron, two red candles for energy, and sprigs of mint. This was her sacred space where she conducted most of her solitary magic. Oak shelves lined both side walls, while windows looked out into the night on the other.

Moving to the center of the room, she knelt on the floor with her objects. She opened her hands palm-up and tilted her head back. This was her ritual for opening the circle, the sphere in which her magic would be available. The circle was regarded as a space “between worlds,” a place to commune with the high priestess and the powers that emanated from her while still staying grounded on the earthly plane.

Kit knew she would need extra protection within her circle tonight. She’d been summoned to fight phantoms. They’d both seen her and picked up her scent. They would not soon forget her, nor would they miss the opportunity to catch her unawares. Thus, she lifted the wand, freeing her mind of mortal and earthly jargon, opening herself completely to magic. Words spilled from her lips as she called for the guardians.

“O spirits of the east, ancient one of air, I call you to attend this circle. Charge this by your powers, thee. As I will so mote it be.”

Beams of bright light spun above her head winding around and around until a spiral of tiny circles formed a larger sphere that surrounded her within her magical circle. The stagnant air around her signaled that nothing was getting inside. Kit knew she was now protected.

With a touch of her fingers to the new candlewicks, she lit the candles—she always used new candles so that vibrations picked up by secondhand materials or equipment wouldn’t disturb the effectiveness of the magic. The warm glow from the flame mesmerized and filled her with a sense of calm she often lacked in the earthly world.
